The Internal Revenue Service is in the midst of its busiest time of the year – the Presidents' Day holiday and week. During this time, especially the Tuesday following the holiday, the IRS receives many more phone calls than the rest of the year.
The IRS does not want you, or someone like me, to wait on hold for an unnecessary amount of time. Here are two pieces of key information the IRS is reminding accountants and CPAs to share with our clients.
Where’s My Refund? More than 90 percent of refunds are issued in less than 21 days. IRS representatives will not provide individual refund information over the telephone before then. You can easily track your refund by using the Where’s My Refund tool. It’s available on IRS.gov and provides the most up-to-date information available.
I didn’t get my W-2. Employers are required to send to their employees a Form W-2, Statement of Earnings, by Jan. 31. You should allow enough time for the form to be mailed to their address of record. If you do not receive a W-2 by mid-February, your first call should be to your employer. Make sure the employer has your correct address. After contacting the employer you have not still received your W-2, then contact the IRS. IRS will send a letter to the employer.
If you have to call the IRS, do so after Presidents' Day week to avoid long wait times.
